Best Post 2007

Best Post 2007
I admit that it was difficult not to be dragged behind my bias on this one, as I have been a fan of this particular writer for quite some time. His ability to use the English language to great effect is truly stunning, his use of pictures ands videos effective, and his skill at manipulating emotion are well impressive.

He is of course Dean of Always Eighteen.

I made a point of suspending my admiration for some good old fashioned objective type reporting on which post was the best of all; but regardless, his winning post – The Dumbing Down of Love – is a simply brilliant piece of writing, from a typically talented writer.

Most Entertaining 2007

February 21st 2008 05:58
We all like a story well told. And this is something that relatively new member Kleonaptra is very good at. She seems to have a knack for her writing, as well as a distinctive style that puts her solidly on the map.

Is she entertaining? You bet she is. She might describe her life as a bad sitcom, but in writing it has all the hallmarks of a good one – the comedy springs from the strangeness of the situations she finds herself in, and every now and then, the deepness of emotion overwhels the humour for a moment of poignancy. So thus, it is my pleasure to announce “Tuesday to Today” as the most entertaining post of 07.

GREAT SONGS - YOUNG FOLKS

February 20th 2008 14:20
Many true music fans will criticize a catchy tune. A true song is built of a foundation of skilled song writing, not just a catchy tune, it may be argued.

However, a catchy tune that can brighten up a day, put a smile on a face, stir emotions, is more than worth attention. For me, Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John is such a song. It’s catchy, and yet has a musical depth and sincerity that it does not possess the limited shelf life of so many other such tunes.

Sometimes you just have to say hey – to hell with music snobs. Sometimes a piece of delicious, almost twee pop music can simply beat the pants of My Bloody Valentine.

Adding a whistle to a song is potential death. Such is the power of the overused and oft tacky whistle tune. Nostalgia is almost certain doom. And yet Peter Bjorn and John have the good musical sensibility and appeal towards genuine emotion that they manage to pull it off with considerable flair. A job well done.

Original Film clip.

Also - an incredible Bluegrass interpretation.

A Guide to Creative Commons

February 20th 2008 14:09
This article will address two issues. What is Creative Commons, and how can it help in Blogging?

Any time you create anything, it is licensed under an All Rights Reserved Licence. Now this is good for creators. It means that other scungy miscreants can’t just copy your design and pretend like they made it themselves (yes, I’m looking at you Todd Goldman).

However, Bloggers are in the market of sharing. We need pictures. We need information. We need videos. So we either need to make everything ourselves (good luck), contact somebody about gaining permission to use their work or find content that is not licensed under All Rights Reserved Licence.

This is where something called Creative Commons can come in handy. Creative Commons is an alternative to all rights reserved copyright, instead opting for some rights reserved.

Through Creative Commons licensing you can permit people to use your content for a number of purposes. The following specific restrictions may be added to work you create –

Attribution. This is the least restrictive way to licence your work. An Attribution licence means anyone can use change and distribute your work with no limit, provided they attribute the work to you in the manor specified.

Share-Alike. This condition means that people may use your work as long as they are willing to license derivative works with an identical license to yours.

No-Derivatives
. This means that a user may use your work for any purpose, but may not make derivative works. For example, an image may be used on a website, but not photoshopped. Might be a good idea if your licensing images of your kids for example.

Non-Commercial
. This means an image may be used for any purpose, but not Commercially to make money.

In case my explanation wasn't great, here's a video on the topic.

Where can you find Creative Commons works to use? There’s a great many places. The one I find most useful is Flickr. Following the Search feature links up to HERE you have the option of searching for works that have been licensed under Creative Commons.

Another great starting place is the Creative Commons main page HERE
. Here you can use the site as a launch pad for finding all kinds of creative commons licensed content.

One final place I’ll give you for finding Creative Commons content is right here on Tales from the other side; another site of mine. Every article on this website can be used for whatever you want, provided it’s non-commercial and attributed.

Hope that helps.

Pink Hair

February 20th 2008 14:07
My Girlfriend likes to color her hair. Now it's yellow. But a while ago it was red.

While it was this color she used to have this red color shampoo that she would use in her hair to maintain the color. When she didn't have red hair any more she let me know I could have this red shampoo. I took it home

Living Trees

February 20th 2008 14:03
This dream started out like The Simpsons. It started out with Liza and Bart, in human form, discussing the trees in the forest. It wasn't comedic at all.

The trees were alive. They had faces on their bases. When they were cut down (pushed over as it was, they weren't strong) Their brains, still made of wood, would be torn apart, and they would die. In a way I could feel their terror - these trees that had been around forever, with nothing to do but wait to have themselves and everyone they new killed for some mans money

Last.FM is a site based on Socail Music enjoyment. I'm just getting into it, with working out it's potential and whatnot. Pretty soon I expect you will hear my own music on it (if you want, haha)

In the meantime, have a look at this 'album blanket' of music I've been giving a listen to of recent. I recommend it

Best Discussion 2007

February 18th 2008 00:16
If there’s one thing Orblers like, it’s a debate. With the introduction of Debate Battles Jon helped to create a new forum for people to tear into each other over various subjects. There were a few good ones, but I feel that it would be remiss to give the title of best debate to anything less than one of the most integral and influential questions of our modern age; Vampires or Werewolves, by Bryn.

I was in Brisbane. My girlfriend and I had just come back from this big ball hosted by the Wilderness society. We had no way to get home. I was discussing possibilities with a man at a Hotel desk, who became offended by my attempts to seem upper class and respectable. My girlfriend then became frustrated and tried to walk home, with me running after her yelling "You can't just walk home in the middle of the night in The Valley! It's dangerous!"
This didn't stop her running through people's backyards, with me lagging behind. It started getting so dark I could hardly see a thing, and I was freaking out. Then I was like - woah man, maybe I'm asleep.

Tribute: Youranter

February 14th 2008 00:16
This is a difficult tribute to write – I despise people crapping on and on about how much they admired so and so, when it’s clearly not the case. Death does not release one from responsibility of their actions or words.

So it is not with a vast insincerity that I mention Youranter – I won’t pretend we were close to each other (or even mutually civil at times). Politically we were on opposite magnetic fields – many of his ideas I could barely listen to for the extremity of his right wing bias

Best Written Blog 2007

February 11th 2008 00:16
The best written piece this year, is awarded to a piece not brilliant for it’s overwhelming mastery of the English language but rather for using concise and specific language to tell a story well and convey a message.

Everybody has felt at one point that the rudeness and cruelty of others is a cancerous and draining force – this following piece expresses that sentiment perfectly, but also gives an optimistic view of human nature, and leaves one with a clear reminder of our abilities to influence the world for the better

Most Provocative Post of 200

February 6th 2008 00:13
Usually I’m fairly good to setting limits and sticking to them… however there was a real richness to a great many of the post floating around this time, and I really was in a position where it would have been worse for me to ignore some of the deserving posts than to bend my own rules.
The most provocative of these posts is from one of Orble’s chief provokers; the ever probing Damo. For the quality of the writing, the subject matter, and the simplicity of the message, I give the title of Provoker 2007 to the post “Hell is Crowded and Heaven is Almost Empty”
