10 Best Sites on the Net For Blogging

December 29th 2008 12:16
This is not a list of blogs; it’s a list for bloggers. A list of sites that are considerably useful.

Serious Blog
Getting serious about blogging?

1. Wikipedia.
ADDRESS: www.wikipedia.org
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Images, Writing, Some multimedia.

ABOUT: Wikipedia is a great resource, first and foremost for gathering information for whatever you’re writing. If you want something with considerable integrity then you’ll also want to scroll right down to the bottom and follow the outgoing links and references at the bottom of the articles.
Every image on Wikipedia can be used for some purpose – some only under fair use, but others can be chopped, changed, modded and demolished to your hearts content. Simply click the image to see what conditions apply. You can find a larger library of multimedia at the Wikimedia commons; http://commons.wikimedia.org.

2. Youtube.
ADDRESS: www.youtube.com.
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Vidoes.
ABOUT: Youtube is excellent in three ways. Firstly, you can browse content, and embed it into your webpage. Secondly you can create content and upload it. Finally, similar to the second option, Youtube allows Webcam users to record directly off a webcam making Vlogs, video blogs, extremely easy.

3. Houndbite.
ADDRESS: www.houndbite.com.
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Audio Clips.
ABOUT: In almost every way, the Youtube of audio. Just like Youtube you can find something interesting and embed it, or you can make your own.

4. LastFM.
ADDRESS: www.last.fm
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Music and Clips.
ABOUT: You can use Last FM for information or content. Content comes from the fact that a majority of artists have a few songs that can be embedded in another page – mostly for 30 seconds, sometimes the whole song. These can be found by going to the artist’s page and clicking on the song you want. You should then see an embed link. For information, not only do most artists have an information wiki, but various Charts tell you how many people using LastFM are listening to certain songs – you can find of the most popular artists, the most popular track, the songs most and least listened to by certain artists and users. Most of you won’t care, really but this is going to send the music nerds giddy. In a similar vein, www.songza.com offers similar embedding services, but was ironing out a few creases last I checked.

5. PDPhoto.
ADDRESS: www.pdphoto.org.
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Images.
ABOUT: Basically a place to find Public Domain images to be used to your hearts content.

6. Flickr.
ADDRESS: www.flickr.com
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Images
ABOUT: Flickr is a place where users can share images. Because they’re not public domain, they’re not all up for grabs, but if you follow the arrows to where you can perform an advanced search, you can find a whole stack of Creative Commons images. (If you don’t understand Creative Commons, click here).

7. Adsense.
ADDRESS: http://www.google.com/adsense
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Advice, Money.
ABOUT: Google Adsense is basically the biggest tool you have in blogging for money. Essentially it allows you to make money of advertisements hosted on your webpage. Good eh? The process is a bit tricky at times but there’s enough advice and tech geeks on the net to help you work it out.

8. Reddit.
ADDRESS: www.reddit.com
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Promotion.
ABOUT: Reddit like digg.com is a great tool to promote your blog. Don’t submit every singe thing you do, because you’ll just give people the shits. It’s a very usefull tool to promote your work. I think you’ll find reddit better than Digg not because there’s less wankers per say, just there’s a better class of wanker.

9. iGoogle.
ADDRESS: Here.
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Thee’s a lot of stuff you can do with this little page, but the best of it is you can use it to sign up to RSS on various WebPages. Meaning no matter what you want to write about – politics, art, film etc; you ill be able to find a multitude of sources that let you know what to cover. Really, any RSS gatherer will help, but this one being connected to your google account (hence, email, adsense) makes it a very convenient choice.

10: Stumble Upon
ADDRESS: http://www.stumbleupon.com/
WHAT YOU CAN TAKE AWAY: Promotion, Content.
ABOUT: Stumble Upon is a tool where users can stumble across interesting content by clicking the little ‘Stumble Button’. You can press the ‘I like it’ button, or the ‘I don’t like it’ button, and through this, your search results become better and better. For those who have problems with writers block (though not with procrastination) this is a gift from above. The other glorious element of stumble upon is that it can be used to promote your work, but really, only bother if it’s up to standard.

Where do I get Artwork for my Blog?

August 20th 2008 11:28
Copyright is a right pickaxe up your nose, hey? Luckily it’s not all as red tape-y as it looks. There are plenty of ways to find images that you can do whatever you want with.
The main sources are Creative commons, Fair Use and Public Domain. There’s an article about Creative Commons in more detail here.

Creative commons means that, instead of existing with an automatic ‘all rights reserved’ license, certain images are created with a license that allows for them to be used by everyone, pending certain conditions. See the above article for more detail.

Fair use is not a category of image so much as a rationale for use. Some images that are legally held under an all rights reserves license can be used in particular circumstances. If you use a low resolution file (as in, of low quality), there is no free equivalent and you could not otherwise illustrate the point, you may use an image, provided you provide the rationale in writing. For example, images from a film you are discussing, a political cartoon on which you are commenting, images of public figures where few are available.

Finally, some images are in Public Domain, meaning they are owned by everyone. They may be in public domain for a number of reasons. Firstly, if they are an older image with expired copyright, they will be public domain. Secondly, if they have been produced by a government body, they will be in Public domain. Finally if the author of the image or the copyright holder has given the image into public domain, it may be considered as such.

So how do we take advantage of this? There are a number of sources from which we can take images legally. The best known are as follows;

WIKIPEDIA.

Images on Wikipedia are held under different licences and rationales, and it is important to know which rationale your image is held under before you use it. When you are on Wikipedia you are able to click on images to see more information on the image. This will allow you to see the rationale Wikipedia has used. You may use any images from public domain, but be sure to follow the conditions of any Creative Commons images, and to only use copyright images if you can produce the same fair use rationale. JUST COPYING ANOTHER PERSON’S RATIONALE FOR FAIR USE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Flickr.
Flickr is another source of images. Most of the images are going to be copyright protected so you will have to search for the ones you can use. You’ll need to click search, and go into advanced search. Then you’ll need to limit yourself to only searching for Creative Commons images. If you make money off your blog, you’ll need to only search for the images which you can use for commercial purposes. This is the fastest and less efficient way of doing it. The much slower, and more efficient way to do it is to simply contact the creator and ask their permission to use the image on your blog.

Remember to be extremely detailed when you give your spiel about who the image belongs to – and the bottom of your post you should have { IMAGE X – by PERSON – Licensed under a– TYPE OF LICENSE (if you alone have been granted permission, say all rights reserved.)} Have this line link back to the original image. This is the safest way to do it, as some people get picky when you use it. IF they ask you not to, just find another.

PD Photo;
PD Photo is a completely awesome page full of Public Domain images that can be used for practically damn well whatever you want. The dude who offers them requests that you let him know what you’re doing with his images, out of curiosity so it would be decent of you to let him know.

Of course there’s more than this but this should set you up well. Basically, be sensible, ask permission where in doubt (usually you’ll get nothing more severe than a request to link back) and have fun!

Matt Preskenis is mad

July 18th 2008 07:19
Matt Preskenis is nuts
Matt Preskenis was brought to my attention with the ‘I Am Drugs Series’.

Clearly the man is mad. Not only is he featured as the personification of PCP in the above video, but he wrote all the videos in the I am Drugs series. And it doesn’t end there.
You can find an assortment of Matt Preskenis material over the net. His personal page is here;

His page here also has a piece of information about things Matt likes and doesn’t like. Hopefully he won’t hate me for reproducing this piece verbatim;

If you're going to beg me for money, that's fine.

Hell, you could be my uncle - yeah, that uncle no one in my family talks about until he magically appears every seven years at Christmas...

But even if you're not my uncle, you can ask me for all the money you want.

I may give you some...

I may not...

I have only one comment:

The moment I tell you, "I don't have any money," and you say, "hey, motherfucker, don't make me pull out my gun!", you are no longer begging me for money...

You're robbing me.

This has happened a couple of times.

I know, the world is funny. Call me crazy, but as far as I'm concerned, every time you threaten to shoot me... you're robbing me.

What's funny, is so many times, you don't really have a gun...

And that's just sad.

Now...

I've been robbed.

My friend Alex and I once had a guy stuff a Glock 9mm in my face while we were in search of some late night entertainment in DC, I've had a Polish cop stick an AK-47 in my face until I gave him the equivalent of $27, and I once had a disheveled guy in Houston threaten to pistol-whip me with a Colt 1901 and/or a Heineken bottle and/or some French handcuffs unless I gave him a quarter...

In all of those cases, I coughed up my dough...

But if my bullshit sensors go off, and you say you have a gun, but I KNOW you don't have a gun...

I'll call you out on it.

And you won't know WHAT to say.

Because if you haven't shot me in the thigh by the time I'm laughing at you, you probably won't be shooting me until some time late tomorrow afternoon...

And that's fine with me.

Hell, I'm not fast, but if you give me a good eighteen hours or so? That's plenty of time.

You think I'm kidding, but the last time some random homeless guy threatened me with a non-existent gun (last weekend on Bleecker Street, for anyone keeping track), I got a free chicken kebab out of the whole exchange, after the shop owner realized that I'd solved an entire night's worth of gun-related problems with one quip....

Not a bad deal.

Sad thing was, I was going to give him my change from the kebab.

So there it is. The great Matt Preskenis. If only we could all be like he, writing beautiful prose, kicking invisible gnomes across the land, wandering off into the sunset.

Matty Bowen: A lesson in Blogging

July 14th 2008 12:08
matt bowen
An artists impression of matt Bowen stealing the arm of a random woman

For a proper biography of Australian footballer Matty Bowen Click here.

I like Matty Bowen. It’s difficult not to. I’ve been kind of secretly in love with him since some time ago, watching a football game, in extra time, and BAM! He gets it and runs off

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOM… and TRYYYYYYYYYY!!!

OK. So that bit about love was clearly a lie. He’s just cool.

So, the question really needs to be asked, as seeing as I am so ridiculously out of my depth here with trying to write a post about… football of all things; is WHYWHYWHY????

What this came from, you see, was that I was going to try and write about anything that was searched for, that resulted in people coming to my site. And having done that for a while things seemed pretty easy. However, when it came time to discuss Matty Bowen, I drew a blank, and continue to do so. I care not enough about him, or football to write the article.

So what do we have instead? We have a cautionary tale where the moral is; Don’t be afraid to push your own limits – but don’t be everything- that’s why we have Wikipedia.

A Guide to Creative Commons

February 20th 2008 14:09
This article will address two issues. What is Creative Commons, and how can it help in Blogging?

Any time you create anything, it is licensed under an All Rights Reserved Licence. Now this is good for creators. It means that other scungy miscreants can’t just copy your design and pretend like they made it themselves (yes, I’m looking at you Todd Goldman).

However, Bloggers are in the market of sharing. We need pictures. We need information. We need videos. So we either need to make everything ourselves (good luck), contact somebody about gaining permission to use their work or find content that is not licensed under All Rights Reserved Licence.

This is where something called Creative Commons can come in handy. Creative Commons is an alternative to all rights reserved copyright, instead opting for some rights reserved.

Through Creative Commons licensing you can permit people to use your content for a number of purposes. The following specific restrictions may be added to work you create –

Attribution. This is the least restrictive way to licence your work. An Attribution licence means anyone can use change and distribute your work with no limit, provided they attribute the work to you in the manor specified.

Share-Alike. This condition means that people may use your work as long as they are willing to license derivative works with an identical license to yours.

No-Derivatives
. This means that a user may use your work for any purpose, but may not make derivative works. For example, an image may be used on a website, but not photoshopped. Might be a good idea if your licensing images of your kids for example.

Non-Commercial
. This means an image may be used for any purpose, but not Commercially to make money.

In case my explanation wasn't great, here's a video on the topic.

Where can you find Creative Commons works to use? There’s a great many places. The one I find most useful is Flickr. Following the Search feature links up to HERE you have the option of searching for works that have been licensed under Creative Commons.

Another great starting place is the Creative Commons main page HERE
. Here you can use the site as a launch pad for finding all kinds of creative commons licensed content.

One final place I’ll give you for finding Creative Commons content is right here on Tales from the other side; another site of mine. Every article on this website can be used for whatever you want, provided it’s non-commercial and attributed.

Hope that helps.

Tribute: Youranter

February 14th 2008 00:16
This is a difficult tribute to write – I despise people crapping on and on about how much they admired so and so, when it’s clearly not the case. Death does not release one from responsibility of their actions or words.

So it is not with a vast insincerity that I mention Youranter – I won’t pretend we were close to each other (or even mutually civil at times). Politically we were on opposite magnetic fields – many of his ideas I could barely listen to for the extremity of his right wing bias

Best Written Blog 2007

February 11th 2008 00:16
The best written piece this year, is awarded to a piece not brilliant for it’s overwhelming mastery of the English language but rather for using concise and specific language to tell a story well and convey a message.

Everybody has felt at one point that the rudeness and cruelty of others is a cancerous and draining force – this following piece expresses that sentiment perfectly, but also gives an optimistic view of human nature, and leaves one with a clear reminder of our abilities to influence the world for the better

Most Provocative Post of 200

February 6th 2008 00:13
Usually I’m fairly good to setting limits and sticking to them… however there was a real richness to a great many of the post floating around this time, and I really was in a position where it would have been worse for me to ignore some of the deserving posts than to bend my own rules.
The most provocative of these posts is from one of Orble’s chief provokers; the ever probing Damo. For the quality of the writing, the subject matter, and the simplicity of the message, I give the title of Provoker 2007 to the post “Hell is Crowded and Heaven is Almost Empty”

Tributes: Nick

January 7th 2008 12:13
Nick was a bit of a funny puppy. He was a good writer, an extremely interesting one. His posts tended to be of a considerable length, and it was hardly unusual to find yourself scrolling down well past the Orble blogs list on a regular post.

Nick earned his domain address. His posts were consistent and of considerable quality

Tributes- David.

January 4th 2008 12:04
David was Orble for a while, in one form or another, an often brilliant and provocative (in a literal sense) individual. In his own words he went ‘from bartender to police officer to monk to taxi driver to postie... And then ... discovered writing ... which is the only occupation that gives any meaning to my nomadic wanderings ... and allows me to continue to be experimental’

He was the biggest name in the whole mob ages ago, albeit under a separate pseudonym of Homer Joyce, on the massively popular site ‘Wordophilia’. I was a massive fan of his writing style, which to this date I would consider some of the best I have read on Orble, and certainly rivals some of the stuff I have read off Orble as well. He stayed up the top for a very long time

There are some bloggers that, though we enjoy them very much, disappear from our sights.

The one apparent disappearance I ought to have noted much earlier was VoicesInMyHead. As I writer I could respect her, as a personality she brought a great sense of positivity and cheer to the Orblesphere. She was an American, whose thought of the day changed into a ‘pursuit of consistency

Plagiarism

When Mrs M left the above comment on a post by Nick, I figured that it the someone mentioned might as well be me. So here is my guide to plagiarism, so far as I see it as relevant to blogging
