Best Post 2006 (The Big One)

January 17th 2007 04:12
The post I'm going to award best post 2006 is one I'll admit I'd never even heard of until its nomination.

Oh and just so you know, there are a few naughty words coming. That might give you a hint.

The beautifully crafted language of the post, it's willingness to be controversial, to be offensive, to be intense, all make it worthy of recognition. Especially when the controversy of the piece is never waved in our face to upset or aggravate us. Rather, the writer is aware of the shock value of her piece, but has the skill and sense of mind not to have need to wave it in our faces, and depends on her skill and talent alone.

SO.

THE WINNER IS.

Most Entertaining Post 2006

January 15th 2007 01:00
Described at least once as as “Quite possibly the funniest site on Orble”, Joe Bloggs knows how to entertain. His post BLOGGS DENIES ORBLE RIFT was immensely popular.
His secret is (aside from the stunning yet dramatically undersized latex pants) that unlike so many others, he doesn’t take things too seriously. He’s not here to wax lyrical on lost love, environmental problems, the presence of filth and depravity in literature, drug policy, blah blah blah bler. He’s here to deliver some hard hitting nonsense in true BLOGGS style.

JOE BLOGGS; I award to you,The Cheerful Blogger!

Best Discussion 2006

January 12th 2007 02:49
Orble reached a fairly dramatic point in November '06. Two schools of thought were developing; one that Orble was a community who work together to read eachothers work, give advice and funtion as a small close knit community, the other that Orble was a place for people to come to via other sources, designed as a community that made it easier for everyone to co-operate towards gaining more viewers from outside the general Blogosphere. The bubble was ready to burst, and Katyzzz was the one with the pin.

Her post Why don't you respond to others by supporting them, visiting and commenting, when they have been good enough to support you? set of a ferocious clash of views, and an intence debate over the role of Orble. The post was barely the size of a good poem, but the page grew abnormally with a flurry of views.

I hope people support me because they enjoy my blog and because they think I have something valid to say. Nice and simple. And I support others because I'm always on the lookout to learn something new. I believe that good writers need to read alot to learn alot so they can write alot.
-Mrs M.

There's unwritten blog etiquette which says if someone comments on your blog, you should at least leave a 'Hi!' comment on theirs.

And if someone links to your site, you should link to theirs.
- Cibby.

…but seriously... KTZ... a good question... we all blog for money, sure... the thought is there... and I drop votes everywhere I can because of it… especially if the person has worked hard on a good thought provoking or entertaining post…but I think that eventually there is more to it than that... therefore to me blogging has morphed into more than a quick way to make a buck...

Like many others, I don't always leave a comment, but the comments really make the blogging more than ‘just a job...’
- Lilla.

I shall always believe in paying my dues, in every area of life, after all, some are not so fortunate as others and I think it's a good thing to count one's blessings and help others along the way, just as they help us from time to time.
- Katyzzz

I dunno... I don't really care if someone leaves a comment on one of my blogs if it's just a comment for the sake of making a comment (if that makes sense). I read and enjoy various other blogs here, but I don't always comment on them. It feels kind of cheap to make a comment with no substance.
- Luke.

"My comment for your comment" sounds to me like barter, and it's a cheap coin to pay with for someone's writing. I write comments or vote on blogs I find interesting, the fact that those people don't visit me doesn't make me like their writing less and it certainly doesn't stop me from going to their blogs again and again. I don't like the idea of someone posting a comment on my blog just because he feels it's a duty or some kind of exchange. I expect people to visit/write comments because they like what they read.
There...I've said it....
- Pilgrim.

Love it or hate it, it was a pretty important monent for Orble.

Best Written Post 2006

And the Winner is, Norm's Thank God You're Here.

The brilliance of the post is very easy to overlook. One really has to really read through it a few times to let the incredible harshness of the piece sneak up on them. And let's face it - it's only the pure quality of the message being expressed that save it from being booed out of the town. If you read it properly you can see what he's saying - that there's some pathetic whining self-righteous twat holding the wheel and driving us all over the edge into a big puddle of arrogant opinion - and who is doing that? It's YOU dear blogger. It's you. It's your perceived specialness, you're apparent greatness that it messing us up;

Show me how informed you really are.
Show everyone.
Show those people who doubted you.
Those who ridiculed and humiliated you.
Show them.
Show them all, now.
Now.
Do it now.
Why not show how before you were born, the world was at a loss.
Until you arrived.

The criticism couldn't be more blaintent, yet the piece doesn't turn into a parody of itself due to it's grace. It will not stoop to the level of those it criticizes. In fact, the moral integrity manages to remain above water, through it's expression of the ridiculousness of the practice of bloggers tearing individuals to shreds just because they can.

Deride a few lesser personalities.
Deride a few larger ones too.
Perhaps some who, through no fault of their own, are rich and famous
need derision or deification.
Defecate all over them.

It is a question, not a statement. It is playing the same stupid game it attacks, but with a cynical awareness that absolves it from that same level - without ever having to express it so explicitly.

Norm - You win the Best Written post.

PEn
I hand you you - The Gold Pen!

BuzzFeed BoingBoing

Buzzfeed it a pretty darn awesome place. The theme, so far as there is one is kind of 'find your new favourite thing.'

This is pretty much the case with Boingboing, of which most people should be familiar with, to at least some extent
