How To Save Money When You Shop

February 20th 2008 07:33
Be Nice to People.

I'm serious. That's all it is. If you're nice to the people who serve you, you'll get something in return.

Now, of course we all know that the Casuals who help you out don't get to choose the prices. However, you'd be alarmed by how much influence they still have over how much you pay. When it comes to shopping instant Karma is the Rule, not the Exception.
Mr Potato Head
Customers who get discounts are like this; friendly, smiley and with a keen sense of humor

For example, major Supermarkets work under a POS System. This means that with items that have no bar code, the person serving you will press the button that corresponds to the product. However, as POS is a constantly updated system, often modified to include new products. It's not rare that a mistake is made. For example, two types of Capsicum are listed, but not the third. And guess who gets to decide if YOU get charged for the cheap one or the expensive one?

Hope you were nice.

Bookshops are another interesting one. Often, the large Hardcover version of a book will be put on Remainder, making it insanely cheap, while the paperback is still full price. Chances are if you're a nice person trying to buy the full price paperback, the person serving you will let you know that you can save about fifteen dollars.

If you were mean, at least you know what that chuckling is, as you leave.

I don't disagree with you there except perhaps on the hard cover books (usually they are much more expensive).

I've had a few "mistakes" happen recently like yesterday the guy at the bakery forgot to charge for my drink.

Then again there are times when the mistakes happen in the other direction where I accidentally got charged twice for the same movie.

So it's always important to check your receipts too.

OFten if you do to a bookstore with deals with publishers to flog their remaindwer stock chep, you'll picky up some year and a half old hardcover books for between 599 - 12.99.

I work as a book shop so just take my word for it.
