Wrapped up - An Art Exhibition
April 20th 2007 11:41
One of my greatest loves is public art... because it's like real art, except that people actually see it, touch it, interact with it. I mean, if you want to make something incredible and put it in a gallery - then great. But you want to say something? Stop with the gallery yarbles and say it where the people are.
I wanted to express Art as a gift to the community... this gave the act of wrapping a chair as a public art piece a nice double meaning.

I'm a bit with you on public art except that it pales in comparison to 'gallery' art in terms of artistic merit...I think that public art is a good vehicle for literature, in some form or another...people who don't read books read signs...sometimes....and ads and all those written forms...which opens up public spaces for wordy types...to me 'gallery' art is almost holy...sacred...but writing on the walls of where we live is fun...I hooked into this article because I'm currently writing a proposal for a public art project...it's a case of less is more...for me, anyway...I liked your bench too...but no ribbon?...

If it's the first then Gallery, definately. And I mean some of the stuff i've seen in Galleries has blown my face off. But when I see a political poster in an art gallery i think, 'Why is this here? Why not at a Train Station. Why not among the people it's speaking too.
And yes... there is a distinction between art and fun, although there is artistic fun
